Message From the Chair

Badri Roysam

Welcome to the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Houston!

These are exciting times for the department, and a period of renewal and growth.  We are welcoming our first National Academy of Engineering (NAE) member, Dr. Kaushik Rajashekara. Rajashekara became an NAE member in 2012 for his contributions to electric power conversion systems in transportation.

We also welcome Xiaonan Shan and Hien Nguyen who will make great impacts in the fields of biomedical signal processing, biosensing systems and deep machine learning respectively.

I continue to be impressed by the caliber of students and faculty we have in ECE. As the home of many high-profile industry consortiums, the research conducted here is world class and makes a significant impact on society.

We will soon be opening the Omron Senior Design and Robotics Lab where students can learn by using state-of-the-art equipment and apply their engineering knowledge by solving real-world problems faced by those working in industry.

ECE faculty members continue to excel in education and scholarship. Please join me in congratulating the many professors who have made breakthroughs in research, received prestigious grant awards and are continually viewed as impactful leaders across campus.

Feel welcome to explore our website. Your feedback is always welcomed.

Best wishes,

Badri Roysam, Ph.D.

DR. BADRI ROYSAM

Dr. Roysam joined the college as Hugh and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor and department chair in Fall 2010. Previously, he served as Professor of Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also served as associate director of the Bernard M. Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems, a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center, and co-director of the Rensselaer Center for Open Source Software. His research interests include the study of algorithms and high-speed computing method for analysis of multi-dimensional images, with applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. He is working on mapping the glio-vascular part of brain tissue, gene transcription activity caused by cognitive stimuli, automated neuron and vessel tracing, biological image change analysis, and assay automation.
